The Obama's Go To Church on Easter

The First Family has become this iconic idea that has existed for as long as I can remember. Possibly as long as the history of this country, but I can’t be sure. I only know what I remember and what I’ve been taught to believe and here’s no secret that I intend to tell you: Black people love The Obamas. My atheist boyfriend loves to point out how much black people love church. How it is so deeply interwoven into the fabric of African-American communities that it is hard to be black in America and not “believe”. He also loves to point out that while in American politics, the majority of blacks tend to side with liberal politicians, most black americans are in fact extremely socially conservative.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the idolizing of the first black First Family. While many liberals advocate for the expansion of the definition of family, much of black america still pine for this rarely attained ideal of the nuclear family. The Obamas serve as an iconic example of the American dream fulfilled. The Obamas as an icon resonates with proponents of the idea that if only we could “fix” the black family, we could fix all the problems endemic to black communities. I doubt this is true, but in the meantime they sure are nice to look at…
